How the UK NHS and RedStar AI reduced FLS case processing time by over 50%
Learn how RedStar AI achieved the massive efficiencies that enable the Fracture Liaison Service to cope with previously unidentified demand.
The challenge
Scotland sees 44,000 fragility fractures per year, and full coverage by a Fracture Liaison Service could save Scotland £11.5m and 15,000 acute bed days per year. But it wasn’t operating to its full potential – not all relevant patients were being seen, and those that were had to wait up to 18 months to benefit.
The service wasn’t able to keep up with demand – a problem only exacerbated by restrictions imposed during the covid-19 pandemic. NHS Glasgow put out a bid for innovative solutions to these problems, and RedStar took on the challenge.
The Results
By mapping the existing operating model RedStar was able to identify pain points, bottlenecks and room for error. We went on to design and deliver solutions with dramatic results.

By changing the way fragility fractures were identified we have been able to increased the number of cases the service identifies to levels far in excess of the number predicted by NHS England’s FLS-DB audit.

reduction in case processing time

patients assessed within 90 days

admin time saved per week
This improvement only emphasised the need for service efficiencies to increase the service capacity. RedStar’s process improvement and software reduced case processing time by over 50% to just 2.1 minutes per case. This means that 99.9% of patients are assessed within 90 days. This improvement is partly due to the elimination of 28hrs of administrative time per week.
As a result of these radical improvements FLS service providers report improved satisfaction at work. The service is also in a good position to continuously improve with automated, real-time reporting against FLS-DB KPIs.
