New NHS-Supported App Helps Scots Improve Brain Health and Reduce Dementia Risk

A new free app called Aging Well has launched in Scotland, offering people simple, everyday tools to protect their brain health and manage long-term conditions.

Developed with funding from the Chief Scientist’s Office through the Scottish Health Industry Partnership (SHIP) and in close collaboration with West of Scotland Innovation Hub, Aging Well has been designed to meet the highest standards of care and usability.

The app allows users to track their conditions, appointments, vitals, medications, and routines, while also providing accessible tips on dementia prevention and healthy ageing. Its goal is to support people in taking small daily actions that can improve long-term health outcomes and quality of life.

There is growing evidence that dementia is not inevitable. Research shows it can be prevented, especially when modifiable risk factors are addressed in midlife – including hypertension, diabetes, inactivity, and social isolation. A Lancet Commission study (2024)1 estimates that up to 45% of dementia cases could be prevented by tackling 14 key risk factors.

“Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer, and every 3 minutes someone develops it.2 With Aging Well, we want to give people across Scotland practical tools to take control of their health and reduce their risk. By combining NHS expertise with simple, user-friendly technology, we can help people live better, longer,” said Andrew Conkie, CEO of Red Star.

Aging Well is free to download now on the App Store and Google Play.
